TSR Punching Shear Reinforcement for Steunpunt Roodehaan – Groningen

Project Background

At the Bremerhavenweg in Groningen, the new Steunpunt Roodehaan service centre is under construction: a future-proof facility for the management and maintenance of provincial infrastructure. The service centre plays a key role in the maintenance of civil structures, waterways, cycle paths and winter road maintenance operations.

The new complex comprises:

  • 1.600 m² of modern office space
  • 1.000 m² of workshop and warehouse facilities
  • 2.400 m² of parking and storage areas
  • 2 hectares of salt storage facilities

The design is fully focused on sustainability, circularity and nature-inclusive construction. In close collaboration with BAM Integrale Projecten Noord and BDG Architecten, robust, low-maintenance and circular materials were selected. By applying functional and demountable structural systems, the project aims to achieve a high Building Circularity Index (BCI).

Green roofs, water retention zones and carefully selected native vegetation create a variety of microclimates that contribute to enhancing local biodiversity — fully aligned with the sustainability ambitions of both the Province of Groningen and BAM.

Contribution of Terwa and Vilton

For the realisation of this project, Terwa was closely involved in collaboration with its partner and supplier Vilton, as well as the project developer BAM Integrale Projecten Noord. The need for punching shear reinforcement was identified by Vilton at an early stage of the project.

Through close cooperation, the technical design of the punching shear reinforcement was further developed, with tailor-made solutions aligned with the structural design. In addition, the delivery schedule was carefully coordinated with the construction planning. This collaboration resulted in the supply of over 1,300 TSR punching shear reinforcement units.

The TSR systems ensure efficient load transfer at column heads and wall ends. By increasing the punching shear resistance and shear capacity of concrete floors and foundations, thinner ground and floor slabs can be applied without compromising structural safety. This provides designers and contractors with greater flexibility in the design and execution of foundations and floor structures.

The application of TSR punching shear reinforcement therefore forms an essential part of the reinforced concrete load-bearing structure and contributes to a durable, safe and structurally high-quality foundation for the entire building.

Advantages of TSR Punching Shear Reinforcements

  • Increased load-bearing capacity
Enhances punching shear resistance and shear capacity around columns and wall ends, allowing floors to carry higher loads.
  • Simplified installation
Easy installation from both above and below. One side of the TSR system is marked in green to ensure correct positioning on site.
  • Improved integration of building services
Building services such as pipes and conduits can be installed more easily beneath concrete slabs.
  • Design flexibility
Suitable for various concrete strengths, slab thicknesses and load conditions.
  • Improved structural safety
Reduces stress concentrations and helps prevent cracking.
  • Cost and time savings
Reduced material usage, lower transport costs, fast installation and reduced overall construction costs.
  • Optimised use of structural space
Minimises the need for downstand beams and increases spans between columns and wall ends.

Areas of Application

  • Foundation slabs and pile caps
  • Floor slabs around columns and wall ends, including applications in car parks, residential buildings and office buildings
  • All structures where point loads occur on concrete slabs

New Service Centre Roodehaan in Groningen the Netherlands

Why This Project Is Special

Steunpunt Roodehaan is a flagship project within BAM’s vision “Building a sustainable tomorrow”. The sustainability ambitions for this project exceed the initial requirements; for example, additional photovoltaic panels have been installed to further offset energy consumption.

The design is carefully integrated into its surroundings and tailored to the prominent location within the Hunze zone. Through the incorporation of green infrastructure, water features, nesting facilities, wildflower meadows and other nature-inclusive measures, the project provides a significant boost to local flora and fauna.

Terwa is proud to contribute its structural solutions to this forward-looking and nature-inclusive construction project.
